If I wrote more to the public mind or the public taste, I talked — my friend, my late friend, Jim Michener, we were friends, and even though we didn’t agree politically, we got along personally, famously.1 I told him — he said, “How do you get away with writing the way you do?” And I said, “I just do it and they let me do it.”2 And I said, “But this is the reason I sell thousands and you sell millions, because you go along with popular taste I make no pretense to.”3
