I’ve been making plays for 40 years, and some people who encounter my work for the first time are saying, “Oh, he just is trying to put us on, and he doesn’t care about us, and this is terrible stuff.” ((Greater Kindness, Leprosy Stand, Let Them Ventilate, MacArthur)) That’s their problem, not my problem. I mean of course I want everybody to love what I do, but I know through experience that not everybody’s going to do that. ((Different Colored Inks, Known By Others, Pandering To A Market)) And I think that’s because they have been conditioned in such a way that they’re not open to the kind of exploratory search for surprise that I’m concerned with. ((Truly Taboo)) That makes them feel insecure.
