I grew up two miles from here and I live in Malibu, but it was really a very different Malibu instead of the glamour of Hollywood, what people think now — it was very much — my dad was an artist’s artist, people who loved horses and the land.1 And the Hollywood people who moved out here, moved out here, because it was really to be close to nature. So, I grew up very close to nature, and what I realized was that — and I realized this when I studied in New York, that being close to nature had really made me very Emersonian, meaning very much about a type of deeper transcendental spirit that I felt active, because I did spend so much time in the outdoors as a child and really with nature.2
