Well, he was a professor there in New York and many other places. But at any rate, Norman was a great, great scholar. I think he was the greatest Old Testament scholar that this country has ever produced.1 And he was a radical Marxist, and he wrote this absolutely marvelous book on ancient Israel and the revolution affected by ancient Israel, which introduced political, economic, and social revolution into the world.2 And that’s what the Bible is all about. And he was just, I think, the most powerful intellectually, but nevertheless there was an extraordinary large number of people committed to that then.
