The danger is if you become an apprentice, all you do is you learn how to do what your mentor does, which unfortunately describes far too higher percentage of say like what graduate school consists of.1 You just become a disciple of your professor’s thinking, and then — and so it just becomes third hand, fourth hand, fifth, the echo chamber of nonsense, like way too much of what passes for intellectual life is sort of just like intellectual reverb that’s designed not to wake up the tenure committee, kind of the whole — the name of the game is you consulting your own experience of your humanity.2 Nobody can give you the — you are your own greatest authority on what you find is true, and that is ultimately the basis for your authenticity and vision and appeal as an artist.3
